Co-ordination and Musicality Workshop

friday 28, saturday 29 and sunday 30 June 2013

LOCATION: CENTRAL ATHENES, GREECE

Join Bred In The Bone’s Artistic Director Matthieu Leloup for a unique 2 day physical theatre workshop on coordination, musicality and impulse work. Supported by members of the company, participants will work as an ensemble to rediscover their bodies and find new sources of creativity.

Bred In The Bone’s work is rooted in the actor and derives from dedicated training, exploring and expanding the research on the actors’ craft. Through coordination and musicality we look to lead the ensemble on a path of discovery, igniting the physical and vocal impulses inside ourselves.

Bred In The Bone are actively seeking new collaborators and performers to be part of a large scale production which will premiere in the UK at the end of September.  Participation in this workshop can be considered as an audition for the company.

RESIDENCIES IN ACTORS TRAINING, SUMMER 2012, PARIS, KENT, ICELAND!!!.

BRED IN THE BONE THEATRE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE:

SUMMER RESIDENCIES 2012

"Training with Bred In The Bone was easily one of the best experiences if not the best I have had in the theatre and also in life. I have always felt that in regards to training I have previously received, I was not pushed to my limits. Training with Matthieu and the Company not only pushed me to my mental limits in terms of stripping away, but also changed who I am as a person and how I approach life and most importantly theatre.”

Andrew Elkins,UK, participant residency 2011

The Summer Residencies will offer a select group of actors an excellent opportunity to participate in residential workshop courses in Paris, Kent (UK) and Iceland during Summer 2012.

Over the last five years, Bred In The Bone have developed a unique training philosophy for the theatre actor, seeking to integrate diverse techniques into the Actor's craft. Our work aims to bridge the gap between physical theatre and western text based theatre, working with movement, music ant text to create exciting and dynamic theatre.

Our view of theatre is that it is the art of the actors, where internal journeys are made and the practice is to develop the “the right kind of concentration”

We have been committed to sharing of our work since our beginning, among each other and with other learning practitioners. Following two consecutive residencies at the Grotowski Institute, Poland, we are pleased to announce this year's "three cultures, three countries, three residencies" programme.

Open to experienced and younger actors alike, to give yourself the time for maturing and understanding more about the craft of the actor.

Participants will be encouraged to immerse themselves in the training and rehearsal process of Bred In The Bone Theatre company, culminating in a presentation at a London Venue.

Each of our three residencies is a self-contained experience whilst also being part of a complete training experience, should you be offered the chance to spend the whole summer with us.

We have 5 available places for actors who are willing to commit to the full summer experience. For more information please email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Training with Matthieu and the Company not only pushed me to my mental limits in terms of stripping away, but also changed who I am as a person and how I approach life and most importantly theatre.”

“I don’t think I have ever learnt as much as I had over these three weeks about myself or about theatre... and I don’t think I would ever had that experience without the training, encouragement and honesty of Matt’s and the teams work.”

Andrew Elkins, UK, Residency 2011

"My thanks to you and the ensemble again for the fantastic experience in Wroclaw. The work was exactly what I needed in my life at this time and I have not stopped raving about it to any other theatre folk who ask. That said, I wanted to let you know that if any other opportunities arise to work with you again, I would be there in a heart beat. I wish you and yours all the best."

Nicky Renault, Canada, Residency 2011

“I have never been so provoked and challenged as a performer, but more so as a person. The training made me question what I thought it was to act or perform, and why we feel the need to put ourselves in the position of vulnerability, with nowhere to hide but all the space you need to simply 'be’.”

Augusta Backman, Iceland, Residency 2010

“It was the most fulfilling experience and the biggest change in perspective I have ever experienced. It has changed my perception of theatre and the reasons why I want to do it, but also my outlook on life. It placed me on a search for more and made me question my honesty to myself and those around me, my relationships as a whole.”

Ariadna Tilve, Spain, Residency 2010

Bred In The Bone begins with research into the actor’s craft and in doing so is indebted to the diverse backgrounds of its members and associate practitioners. Our workshops are open to professional actors/performers and students who are strongly motivated and passionate about their craft. Through these sessions we seek to share our experience and meet future collaborators for our projects.

Over the last seven years, Matthieu Leloup has lead workshops and taught acting and directing, developing his own training based on Musicality and Emotion Action. His work derives from the experience of being a long term member of Song of the Goat theatre (Teatr Pie?? Koz?a) in Poland, original work with Master Judith Holzer from Germany on Free Movement (Indonesia workshops) and working as an actor for fifteen years across Europe.

Bred In The Bone's training incorporates this focus on the body with the work of Jacques Lecoq, Comedia dell’Arte, Stanislavski and Clowning. We seek to generate spontenaity in both text and movement. With Jeremy Harrison, Matthieu created a training for the actor musicianship at Rose Bruford College (musicality and theatre text), unique in the UK, inspired by the demanding training of Stanievski and Song of the Goat Theatre.

TYPICALTRAINING (BASIS FOR THE WORKSHOP) INCLUDES:

Our work is an ongoing exploration of the dynamics of the Ensemble and the techniques that will enable a flow of emotion in the actor, to fill the text with life

physical warm-up: -  exercices, focussing on energy through rythm, singing, step work.

impulse work / ensemble work : - at the core of our training is the idea of physical impulse, in the individual and between partners. Training explores the practice of chorus and protagonist, and the dynamics of the Ensemble. This section often includes use of objects, stick work; and notion of use of space and spatial dynamic.

Emotion action - From impulses to a flow of continuous changing actions ; the notion of emotion as a physical event growing and changing in time. From the breathing to the word, finding the flow of words emerging from the flow of physical impulses.

Musicality / text work : Training based on the connection we make between playing a musical instrument and playing with the instrument that is the body/emotion of the actor. Using live music to make this connection concrete and perceptible to the actor.

This is a highly physical training giving performers the opportunity to explore techniques including impulse work, improvisation, text study and to be a part of an ensemble of musicians and actors
Each workshop focuses on different aspects of performance and training but will all by the nature of our work be physically and emotionally demanding.

PHYSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP  LEVEL 2-3

December 13-17 2009, March 7-8/15-16 and July 14-17th 2010

@ Chisenhale Dance Studios

Can the body think for itself? Can we melt into the space?

By using techniques including rhythm and impulse work, acrobatics and space awareness exercises, we will examine how the performers inherent expressiveness and imagination can be used to find new sources of creativity. It will be ideal for those who want to use the body as a key element in the devising process, and incorporating these into text work.

The workshop will be led by two practitioners, Marcin Rudy and Matthieu Leloup both long term members of Poland's award winning Song of the Goat theatre they will be incorporating techniques learnt from their diverse backgrounds. Some notions of Musicality (working the text with music) will also be explored. Actor-musicians with their instruments are particularly welcomed!

5h/day training time.
