Colin Ellwood - director/dramaturg



Programme Director of the Theatre Directing Programme at Rose Bruford College. Previously Artistic Director of Opening Acts, a Scottish Arts Council funded Theatre-in-Education touring company.  For the RSC, work included  Hamlet TIE tour and the premiere of Peter Whelan’s stage version of Disraeli’s novel Sybil.  Also assistant director at the RSC, working with Adrian Noble, David Thacker, Michael Bogdanov, Sam Mendes, John Caird and Steven Pimlott, amongst others.  Also director of the RSC Festival, directing Beckett’s Waiting for Godot with Linda Bassett, Finbar Lynch, Denys Hawthorn and Jonathan Cullen.

As Artistic Director of Strangers Gallery directed the UK premiere of Lope De Vega’s Jewess of Toledo at the Bridewell and the premiere of the newly discovered original version of Rattigan’s Separate Tables, at the Kings Head with Barbara Jefford, Lucy Whybrow, Mark Eden and Diane Hardcastle.  Also directed at The Traverse Edinburgh; for The Dufay Collective in Norwich Cathedral as part of the Norwich Festival; Shakespeare’s Globe (Lope de Vega’s Innocent Child); Soho Theatre (Loveplay by Moira Buffini) and at most of the major drama schools, including Guildhall, Webber Douglas, Central and ALRA.  He has also given workshops at universities (Oxford, Tours, Newcastle, Reading, Warwick etc) and at the Theatre Museum and Actors’ Centre and engaged in a range of performance research projects
